چکیده

Motivation Outcome of a bloodstream infection/sepsis (BSI/S) is defined in different ways in different research projects [1]. In this, BSI/S share the characteristics of other fields of medicine; specific issues are related to diversity of causative agents, the clinical focus of infection, severity of comorbid conditions, presence of indwelling devices, multiplicity of affected patient populations, and others [2]. A preliminary list of putative core outcome set (COS) might be:

Blood culture-based detection of bloodstream infections

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are associated with adverse clinical and health-economic outcomes [1,2]. Th irty to forty percent of all cases of severe sepsis and septic shock are culture-proven BSIs, for which there is a rapid decline in survival rates in cases where inadequate antimicrobial therapy is administered within the fi rst 24 hours [3,4]. As a consequence, clinicians often resort to e...

Clinical efficacy of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations for the treatment of bloodstream infection due to extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in haematological patients with neutropaenia: a study protocol for a retrospective observational study (BICAR)

INTRODUCTION Bloodstream infection (BSI) due to extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacilli (ESBL-GNB) is increasing at an alarming pace worldwide. Although β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor (BLBLI) combinations have been suggested as an alternative to carbapenems for the treatment of BSI due to these resistant organisms in the general population, their usefulness for the treatme...

Epidemiology and clinical outcomes of multidrug-resistant, gram-negative bloodstream infections in a European tertiary pediatric hospital during a 12-month period.

BACKGROUND Bloodstream infections caused by multidrug-resistant, Gram-negative (MDRGN) bacteria represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate empiric treatment are the most important determinants of patient outcome. The objective of our study was to assess the epidemiology and clinical outcome of MDRGN sepsis in a tertiary-care pediatric hospital dur...

Frequency of Pathogens and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Bacteria Isolated from Bloodstream Infections

Background and Objectives: Blood stream infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in the world. In this study, we aimed at describing the organisms responsible for septicemia in 2006-2007 and their antimicrobial susceptibility that might lead to proper selection of antimicrobial agents in hospitalized patients with suspected sepsis. Materials and Methods: Microbiology reports of ...

A ten-year review of neonatal bloodstream infections in a tertiary private hospital in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION Neonatal mortality in developing countries is usually due to an infectious cause. The gold standard of investigation in developing countries is a positive blood culture. It is important to know the aetiology of neonatal bloodstream infections so that empiric treatment can be effective. METHODOLOGY We conducted a retrospective clinical audit over ten years between January 2000 unt...
